Discussions of Sexual Assualt, Violence, and Strong Language
Have you ever wondered why Ram during "Big Fun" specifically says 'whee' on page 34? Well, Ram is making a rather disturbing reference to the 1972 Thriller film, Deliverance directed by John Boorman, based on the novel written by James Dickey. Starring Jon Voight (Ed Gentry), Burt Reynolds (Lewis Medlock), Ned Beatty (Bobby Trippe), and Ronny Cox (Drew Ballinger) as 4 well-off city businessmen who decide to spend a weekend canoeing down a river before it is destroyed and a once fun, exciting weekend getaway with the boys turns into a grim and disturbing fight for their survival.
When the men first arrive in scenic rural Georgia, they come across a mysterious group of locals who are immensely weary of Ed, Lewis, Bobby, and Drew's plan to canoe down a river that is notoriously dangerous and near impossible to travel in. Drew has a wholesome musical duel (0ne of very few wholesome moments in Deliverance) with one of the locals known as the 'Banjo Boy' (Billy Redden). The men are quite condescending to the locals who they mock as 'inbreds' and then the men set off on their adventure.

The next day as the men venture further into the murky and unforgiving water, Bobby and Ed in one canoe, lose sight of Lewis and Drew's canoe and they become lost. In an attempt to take a breather and figure out how to get back on track, the two men reach the land and they soon notice they are being watched. Two locals called the Mountain Man (Bill McKinney) and the Toothless Man (Herbert 'Cowboy' Coward) emerge with a shotgun and the two men attempt to have a nice, civilized conversation with the two men in the hopes of them helping Ed and Bobby find their way, these locals have darker, sadistic intentions.
The Mountain Man noticeably disregards the personal space of the two travelers, the locals acknowledge the fact that Bobby "looks like a pig" and this interaction comes to a boiling point when the Toothless Man points his gun at Ed, ties him to a tree and forces Bobby to strip. Bobby attempts to escape but the Mountain Man captures and sodomizes him. As the local is raping Bobby, he forces him to "squeal like a pig" and both men make horrifying and haunting 'whee' sounds.
Eventually, this horrific act ends, and then locals turn back to Ed, who was forced to watch his friend endure this, they free him and are about to sexually assault Ed when Lewis (Ed and Bobby's friend from the other canoe) sneaks up behind these monsters and shoots the Mountain Man with a bow and arrow where he dies slowly and painfully. So, that is what Ram is referencing in Big Fun. I hope that you found this post insightful, although this was a rather disturbing article.
